Smoking in the Early Days Smoking and the use of Tobacco has been around for a long time. When the pilgrims landed in USA, they successfully began farming tobacco. John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia back in 1609  called his crop of tobacco “brown gold”.  In earlier days it was hip, if you were a smoker.
